Who We Are

OCVN, the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist program holds courses in interpretation skills, ecological concepts, geology, herpetology, forestry, ornithology, entomology, plants, mammals, aquatic life, and stewardship. This program is operated by the by the Wood County Park District and supported by the OSU extension office. 

Classes run from April to June. An annual information session and the previous class' graduation banquet are held in January. 

Registration Requirements:

  • Application and $200 program fee received by April
  • Approved FBI and BCI background check (paid through the program fees). 

Certification requirements:

  • 40 hours of classroom and field instruction
  • score a minimum of 70% on final take-home exam
  • perform 40 hours of approved volunteer service between April and October

To remain certified:

  • perform 20 hours of volunteer service and 8 hours of advanced training January through October, annually.

What We Do

OCVN classes teach valuable knowledge about our natural world. Learn more to love about nature, meet new friends, and improve your community. 

Each OCVN class has a maximum of 15 participants which creates a personalized learning environment and close-knit friendships. Experience field trips and classes taught by experts in respective fields. OCVN graduates are invited to additional educational opportunities, can lead programs, and have the opportunity to assist with educational camps and classes.
